The Department of Education has commended Globe Telecom for its Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) program which equips public school teachers nationwide with necessary skills to efficiently integrate information and communications technology (ICT) in their teaching strategies.<br />
<br />
Speaking in behalf of DepEd Assistant Secretary Rey Laguda during the graduation ceremonies for GFT Luzon Cluster at the Mind Museum, DepEd Director III Demi I. Manuel hailed the GFT program for empowering teachers and allowing them to make significant contributions to learning and achievement.<br />
<br />
"Globe Bridging Communities, the corporate social responsibility arm of Globe, plays an important role in recognizing the contributions made right across the education sector towards nation-building and enabling governmental policies in extending the benefits of ICT in the classroom, in curriculum design and development and in every teacher and student in our country," Manuel said.<br />
<br />
Manuel added that experience has shown that a variety of support and enabling mechanisms must be implemented to optimize the use of ICT by the teachers. While traditional teacher leadership skills and practices are still important, she said that they must also have access to relevant, timely, and on-going professional development.<br />

"We are very happy that the private sector has been very active in helping the education sector in achieving its national as well as global development goals. We also hope that when the GFT graduates go back to their respective schools, they will have new knowledge, new skills, new perspectives and enhanced methods and strategies in ICT integration," Manuel said.<br />
<br />
Sixty-nine mentors from Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro, Cavite, and National Capital Region received their diploma from Globe and its implementing partner, Coalition for Better Education (CBE), for having completed a five-day live-in training workshop on how to integrate ICT in their respective subject areas such as Math, Science, English, and Heyograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika (HeKaSi). The training is equivalent to three units in a masteral program. GFT, which started in 2009, has trained at least 386 teachers from 374 public schools in various parts of the country.<br />
<br />
Yoly C. Crisanto, Globe Head for Corporate Communications, said that since ICT provides increased teacher motivation and improved student memory retention and comprehension of various subjects, GFT was able to transform computers and the internet from being mere sources of information into instruments of interactive teaching and online collaboration.<br />
<br />
"Globe is committed to be a relevant and innovative leader in maximizing ICT for education in public schools. So we continue to work hand-in-hand with DepEd and our partners as we aspire to help our schools meet 21st century standards in terms of teaching and in giving students access to quality education," she said.<br />

Jeffrey O. Tarayao, President of the Coalition for Better Education, on the other hand, expressed appreciation to Globe for investing in the public school teachers and ensuring that ICT becomes <br />
really valuable and meaningful to them.<br />

"CBE is humbled by the fact that we have a partner that truly lives up to the vision of a better education for young Filipinos nationwide. GFT could have been a word, but short of one letter. To be a GFT is to be a GIFT. "I" could mean innovation in teaching. "I" could also mean integrity which every Filipino teacher must protect," he said.<br />
<br />
CBE provides the content of the training modules which include lessons on the proper use of ICT in classroom activities, online assessment, effective and efficient management of class resources, creation of virtual classrooms and moderate discussion boards, preparation of portfolio of classroom project activities, and demo-lecture of the modules prepared by the teachers.<br />
<br />
The teachers are guided on how to efficiently use and navigate through the internet and are given an assessment tool for the adoption of a better grading system. There are also modules focusing on online collaboration as well as on creating projects where they could apply all that they have learned from the training.<br />

Some 500 stakeholders will gather on November 3 and 4 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City for the 2016 Education Summit to tackle the urgent concerns of the education sector and define the vision and agenda of basic, higher and technical-vocational education in the country.<br />
<br />
Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said that the upcoming event is a follow through to the recent (sectoral) Social Development Initiatives Summit held in Davao City that aimed to flesh out the social development agenda of the administration.<br />
<br />
The outcome of the Education Summit will be the education sector’s input to the next Philippine Development Plan.<br />
<br />
“Through this summit, we hope to lay down a clear roadmap that will make education accessible, relevant and liberating,” Briones emphasized.<br />
<br />
Part of the 10-point socio-economic agenda of the Duterte administration is to increase spending in basic education and incorporate mandatory education about the evils of drugs. According to Briones, another key focus of the Department of Education (DepEd) is to intensify and expand the Alternative Learning System (ALS).<br />
<br />
Among the issues to be discussed in the summit are:</div>

<li>Linkage of education and the economy;</li>
<li>Human resource and management issues in education;</li>
<li>Understanding the condition and needs of learners to guide intervention;</li>

<li>Higher education as a force of social and cultural transformation;</li>
<li>Higher education as accelerator of innovation and inclusive economic prosperity.</li>

The K to 12 Curriculum and its support system, as well as ALS and its equivalencies, will also be taken up.<br />

“We prepared a comprehensive agenda for this summit to ensure that all issues and challenges are adequately addressed to allow the trifocal education system to really move forward,” Briones explained.<br />

Aside from Briones, other key personalities who will take center stage in the summit are Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Patricia Licuanan, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Director Guiling Mamondiong.<br />

The heads of the three education agencies will share their respective agenda for the education sector, taking into consideration the mandates of the constitution, laws and international commitments, and the directions they have set for their respective agencies.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">China's Embassy also said that they had donated P50 million for farmer and fishermen relief efforts in affected regions, while the Red Cross Society of China promised to provide $100,000 in humanitarian aid.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">All in all, Chinese typhoon-relief aid came to P90 million. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"The Chinese side is confident that under the leadership of President [Rodrigo] Duterte, people in the stricken areas will overcome the calamity and return to their normal work and lives as soon as possible," the Chinese Embassy said in a statement.   </span><br />

What is it? I’m talking about the mother of all antioxidants, the master detoxifier and maestro of the immune system: GLUTATHIONE (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own”).<br />

The good news is that your body produces its own glutathione. The bad news is that poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete your glutathione. This leaves you susceptible to unrestrained cell disintegration from oxidative stress, free radicals, infections and cancer. And your liver gets overloaded and damaged, making it unable to do its job of detoxification.<br />

In treating chronically ill patients with Functional Medicine for more than 10 years, I have discovered that glutathione deficiency is found in nearly all very ill patients. These include people with chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, liver disease and more. At first I thought that this was just a coincidental finding, but over the years I have come to realize that our ability to produce and maintain a high level of glutathione is critical to recovery from nearly all chronic illness — and to preventing disease and maintaining optimal health and performance. The authors of those 76,000 medical articles on glutathione I mentioned earlier have found the same thing!<br />

So in today’s blog I want to explain what glutathione is, why it’s important and give you 9 tips that will help you optimize your glutathione levels, improve your detoxification system and protect help yourself from chronic illness.</div>

<strong>What is Glutathione?</strong></h2>

Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine.<br />

<div class="content-list-component mt-paragraph text">
The secret of its power is the sulfur (SH) chemical groups it contains. Sulfur is a sticky, smelly molecule. It acts like fly paper and all the bad things in the body stick onto it, including free radicals and toxins like mercury and other heavy metals.<br />

<div class="content-list-component mt-paragraph text">
Normally glutathione is recycled in the body — except when the toxic load becomes too great. And that explains why we are in such trouble ...<br />

<div class="content-list-component mt-paragraph text">
In my practice, I test the genes involved in glutathione metabolism. These are the genes involved in producing enzymes that allow the body to create and recycle glutathione in the body. These genes have many names, such as GSTM1, GSTP1 and more.<br />

These genes impaired in some people for a variety of important reasons. We humans evolved in a time before the 80,000 toxic industrial chemicals found in our environment today were introduced into our world, before electromagnetic radiation was everywhere and before we polluted our skies, lakes, rivers, oceans and teeth with mercury and lead.<br />

That is why most people survived with the basic version of the genetic detoxification software encoded in our DNA, which is mediocre at ridding the body of toxins. At the time humans evolved we just didn’t need more. Who knew we would be poisoning ourselves and eating a processed, nutrient-depleted diet thousands of years later?<br />

Because most of us didn’t require additional detoxification software, almost of half of the population now has a limited capacity to get rid of toxins. These people are missing GSTM1 function — one of the most important genes needed in the process of creating and recycling glutathione in the body.</div>

Nearly all my very sick patients are missing this function. The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential gene. That includes me. Twenty years ago I became mercury poisoned and suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome due to this very problem. My GSTM1 function was inadequate and I didn’t produce enough glutathione as a result. Eventually, my body broke down and I became extremely ill ...<br />

This is the same problem I see in so many of my patients. They are missing this critical gene and they descend into disease as a result. Let me explain how this happens ...</div>

<strong>The Importance of Glutathione in Protecting Against Chronic Illness</strong></h2>

<div class="content-list-component mt-paragraph text">
Glutathione is critical for one simple reason: It recycles antioxidants. You see, dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot potato. They get passed around from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then finally to glutathione which cools off the free radicals and recycles other antioxidants. After this happens, the body can “reduce” or regenerate another protective glutathione molecule and we are back in business.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="content-list-component mt-paragraph text">
However, problems occur when we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress or too many toxins. Then the glutathione becomes depleted and we can no longer protect ourselves against free radicals, infections, or cancer and we can’t get rid of toxins. This leads to further sickness and soon we are in the downward spiral of chronic illness.<br />

But that’s not all. Glutathione is also critical in helping your immune system do its job of fighting infections and preventing cancer. That’s why studies show that it can help in the treatment of AIDS.<br />

Glutathione is also the most critical and integral part of your detoxification system. All the toxins stick onto glutathione, which then carries them into the bile and the stool — and out of your body.</div>
<div class="content-list-component mt-paragraph text">
And lastly, it also helps us reach peak mental and physical function. Research has shown that raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development.<br />

If you are sick or old or are just not in peak shape, you likely have glutathione deficiency. In fact, the top British medical journal, the <em>Lancet</em>, found the highest glutathione levels in healthy young people, lower levels in healthy elderly, lower still in sick elderly and the lowest of all in the hospitalized elderly.<br />

Keeping yourself healthy, boosting your performance, preventing disease and aging well depends on keeping your glutathione levels high. I’ll say it again ... Glutathione is so important because it is responsible for keeping so many of the keys to UltraWellness optimized.<br />

<em>Eat Foods that Support Glutathione Production</em>

<strong>1. <a href="http://maxglutathione.altervista.org/product/cellgivity-glutahione-accelerator/"><span style="color: #339966;">Consume sulfur-rich foods.</span></a></strong> The main ones in the diet are garlic, onions and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc.).<br />

<strong>2. <a href="http://maxglutathione.altervista.org/product/cellgivity-glutahione-accelerator/"><span style="color: #339966;">Try bioactive whey protein.</span></a></strong> This is great source of cysteine and the amino acid building blocks for glutathione synthesis. As you know, I am not a big fan of dairy. But this is an exception — with a few warnings. The whey protein MUST be bioactive and made from non-denatured proteins (“denaturing” refers to the breakdown of the normal protein structure). Choose non-pasteurized and non-industrially produced milk that contains no pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics. Immunocal is a prescription bioactive non-denatured whey protein that is even listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference.<br />

Start slow and build up to 30 minutes a day of vigorous aerobic exercise like walking or jogging, or play various sports. Strength training for 20 minutes 3 times a week is also helpful.<br />

However, the production and recycling of glutathione in the body requires many different nutrients and you CAN take these. Here are the main supplements that need to be taken consistently to boost glutathione. Besides taking a multivitamin and fish oil, supporting my glutathione levels with these supplements is the most important thing I do every day for my personal health.<br />

<strong>4. <span style="color: #339966;"><a href="http://maxglutathione.altervista.org/product/cellgivity-glutahione-accelerator/" style="color: #339966;">N-acetyl-cysteine.</a></span></strong> This has been used for years to help treat asthma and lung disease and to treat people with life-threatening liver failure from Tylenol overdose. In fact, I first learned about it in medical school while working in the emergency room. It is even given to prevent kidney damage from dyes used during x-ray studies. <strong>5. <span style="color: #339966;"><a href="http://maxglutathione.altervista.org/product/cellgivity-glutahione-accelerator/" style="color: #339966;">Alpha lipoic acid</a>.</span></strong> This is a close second to glutathione in importance in our cells and is involved in energy production, blood sugar control, brain health anddetoxification. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">The Department’s objective is to promote public understanding and acceptance of people with ADHD. Increased public awareness on the effects of the characteristics and social issues faced by people with AD/HD may result in increased protection of children from neglect and abuse.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Teaching students with special needs requires deeper understanding of their real condition. Learners with AD/HD tend to experience disorganization, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While they may want to overcome these, it is not as simple as others may think.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Teacher Marinil Juan of Pasay City SPED Center, who has been teaching learners with AD/HD for 11 years, shared how she’s handling students with these certain exceptionalities.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Acknowledging that people with AD/HD suffer from inattentiveness, Teacher Marinil said, “I give frequent, small breaks, and I also make sure to give them verbal instructions which are not more than 10 minutes each.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Teacher Marinil also makes sure that she shares common interests with her students. Based on her experience, this makes her students listen more to her.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">“There should be a balance in dealing with these learners. We must be strict and firm, yet loving and approachable,” she added.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Teacher Russell Agcaoili of La Union SPED Center believes that the best way to handle learners with AD/HD is to be thoroughly informed about their condition. She often reads articles and research about AD/HD to further understand the condition of her students.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">“I design effective and appropriate educational materials for my students by collaborating with a developmental pediatrician and parents, as well as observing my learners’ behavior,” she added.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">People with AD/HD often suffer from negative stereotypes from the public, which the DepEd, AD/HD Society of the Philippines, and other agencies and organizations aim to correct through the celebration of the National AD/HD Awareness Week.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">“People would think that kids with AD/HD are unaware of their behavior or actions. But my students come to me and say ‘Ma’am, I can’t stop moving’ and ‘</span><em style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px;">Di ko kayang pigilan ang pagtakbo, Teacher’</em><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">,” Teacher Marinil shared.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">She added that these kids are trapped in a body they have no control of, and that these kids need all the understanding and acceptance they can get.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Teacher Russell added, “Persons with AD/HD need to be accepted in the society, and must be given equal opportunities to grow as individuals.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Reflecting the same passion in handling learners with special needs, SPED Teacher Nora Pablo of Villamor Airbase Elementary School said, “With proper handling, coupled with a passionate heart, students with AD/HD can learn too—in their own way, style and pace.”</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Many of the people with AD/HD have above-average intelligence, are highly creative, and have the ability to multi-task. With proper management and support, people with AD/HD can live a productive life, and can contribute to the nation’s moral, financial and spiritual recovery.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">The DepEd calls for the participation of all schools, especially those schools offering program for children with AD/HD as well as the Special Education (SPED) Centers.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "open sans"; font-size: 14px;">Some of the efforts and activities to be conducted in schools are hanging of streamers, art workshops for children and youth with AD/HD, exhibit on educational services offered to children with AD/HD, community and parents’ forum on understanding and possible employment of people with AD/HD, among others.</span><br />
